For years I have placed a Pyrex measuring cup filled with about a cup of water for 2-3 minutes (to boil) in the microwave to clean burnt on, exploded messes. The time it takes to bring the water to a boil and start to steam in the microwave will be different. There is no need for anything else in the water because the steam takes care to loosen the dried on gunk. Let sit for a minute and then carefully remove the cup of water (you may need an oven mit) and pour the boiling water down the drain. I use a Pyrex measuring cup because they are easier to handle and safer to boil water in. I then remove the turntable (or tray) and carefully place in the sink to wash. Then I take a clean wet rag and wipe out the mess. It is that easy.
Then to keep messes to a minimum you need to click and check out how I keep my microwave (fairly) clean with a messy teenager. Having something that sits in the microwave at all times to cover the food helps to limit the mess.
There is no need for anything else in the water because steam is a powerful cleaning tool. I do want to caution you again about removing the boiling water can be hazardous and that is why with my 1000 watt microwave I only put it on for 2 minutes which takes care of most messes and 3 minutes for explosions of spaghetti or chili. Sometimes I may even use my spray cleaner to help wipe out the mess (also I like the smell).
I hope this method works for you and if you checked out how I keep my microwave clean then you know I rarely have to take care of messes. Thanks for stopping by and let me know if it works for you.
